Registration is still open for those interested in participating in or sponsoring the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce’s 21st annual golf tournament on Aug. 22 at Riverchase Country Club.

The deadline to register is Aug. 18. Anyone interested should contact Chamber Executive Director Bill Powell at 988-5672 or bill@hooverchamber.org.

The tournament will be limited to 128 golfers in a combination of foursomes, twosomes or single players, Powell said.

The tournament will be played with a four-man scramble format, with golfers playing as a four-player team.

Teams will be divided into three flights with prizes offered to all four players of the winning teams of each flight.

A raffle will be held with tickets costing $5 each or a book of five for $20.

“We’re still collecting prizes from Chamber members, but the top grand prize is a weekend stay of two nights at the Hyatt Regency-The Wynfrey Hotel, with a $150 gift certificate to Shula’s Steakhouse and golf for two at Riverchase Country Club,” Powell said. “The value is about $3,500.”

Sponsorships are available, and anyone interested should contact Powell at the phone number or email address listed above.

“To sponsor a hole, we provide a sign for the tee box and list the sponsors on the large sign to be displayed at the tournament and the following luncheon,” Powell said. “To be listed, sponsorships would have to be confirmed by Aug. 18 as well.”

Powell said the Chamber usually makes from $15,000-$18,000 for its scholarship fund and other projects through the tournament.

Scholarship recipients must be a Hoover resident, children of a parent employed by the city or children of a parent employed by the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce.

“About one-third of our members are located outside the city of Hoover, and we have given scholarships to students from Alabaster, Bessemer, Leeds and several other local cities,” Powell said. “We look for ‘good students,’ not necessarily the absolute top of their class, who are active in their communities and have financial need.”

St. Vincent’s Health System is the tournament’s title sponsor.
