HELENA–The Helena Teen Council, an organization run by the city of Helena to promote volunteerism, leadership and knowledge about the city is accepting new applications for the 2016-2017 school year.

The group of students selected to be a part of the Helena Teen Council organization will be able to experience key government speakers with both local and state governments, learn what goes into running a city, organize beneficial projects, get their Give Me 5 hours, be with friends, start building a resume and become a stronger leader in the community.

The Helena Teen Council is open to those in all grade levels who can commit to attending two meetings on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.

In addition to attending the meetings, an application form must be filled out, along with a teacher recommendation form and choosing between one of two topics to write a brief essay.

The application form, teacher recommendation from and essay must be turned in by Aug. 26 to Helena City Hall or emailed to Helenateencouncil@outlook.com.

Applicants will be notified within two weeks after submission.

Helena City Council President Cris Nelson helps lead the organization and in the past the group has visited the state capital in Montgomery, met political leaders such as Sen. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster and State Treasurer Young Boozer and more.
