HELENA–The state of Louisiana has been hit with hard flooding over the last several days that has left thousands homeless and resulted in a number of fatalities after floodwater rose to historic heights.

Students and teachers at Helena Intermediate School have decided to help those affected by flooding by starting a service project the week of Aug. 15.

Through Thursday, Aug. 18, the school will be collecting hygiene products that will be delivered to Louisiana by Friday.

The theme for Helena Intermediate School this year is Helena In Service (H.I.S.) and the school will be collecting items such as soap, body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant and other hygiene items that will be sent to Louisiana.

Mr. Ard’s and Mrs. Ferrell’s fifth grade classes are heading up the project and encouraging anyone to bring in hygiene items by Aug. 18.

The school will not accept cash or checks.
