Alabama Hockey wins season opener 6-2

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. VA. – The University of Alabama’s Hockey team won its first game of the season 6-2 over West Virginia University at South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena on Sept. 9.

Alabama began the game with two early goals by Ian Soifer and James Benedetto. West Virginia’s David Polinski came back with a goal to cut Alabama’s lead to 2-1 at the end of the first.

West Virginia’s JP Sawyer scored in the beginning of the second period and Alabama’s Jeremy Hannah followed with two more goals, keeping Alabama in the lead.  Two of Alabama’s freshmen, Vanny Charleson and Marc Demers, both scored their first career goals in the third period.

Alabama Hockey plays all of their home games at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. The teams’ first six games are away. Their first home game is Oct. 7 against Middle Tennessee.
