HELENA–On the evening of Friday, Sept. 9, a gas spill was reported in an unincorporated portion of Shelby County near Helena and Colonial Pipeline, and various agencies have been working to resolve the issue.

The location of the leak was determined to be near the intersection of Shelby County 91 at Coalmont Road and Lindsey Road near an isolated area, and there are currently no threats to the public, according to Colonial Pipeline.

Colonial employees and contractors are working with local, state and federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Shelby County Emergency Management Agency, the Helena and Pelham Fire Departments, the Shelby County 17 Volunteer Fire Department and the Cahaba Riverkeeper.

Colonial employees and crews are working around the clock at the site of the incident to ensure safety to the public and environment.

During the investigation, Colonial’s two pipelines in the area were initially shut down and one pipeline has now resumed operations.

On Sept. 11, the Helena Police Department said that there is no threat to any Helena residents but the cleanup of the site will continue to be monitored and the department will offer assistance if needed.
