The fourth installment of the 2016 ASWA top 10 poll has some familiar county faces as well as a newcomer making an appearance. Both Spain Park and Montevallo remain highly ranked, while Calera (4-0, 2-0) makes an appearance as the No. 8 team in the 5A class. Thompson, ranked last week for the first time in 27 years, lost a close game to Mountain Brook 20-17 on Sept. 9, which knocked them out of the 7A top 10, but the Warriors still received 13 points in the Week 4 7A poll.

Spain Park (3-1, 1-1), which was beaten on Sept. 9 by Hoover 26-8, dropped from No. 2 in the 7A poll to No. 5. The Bucs, by contrast, jumped from the No. 4 overall spot up to No. 2, behind only defending champ McGill-Toolen. The Jaguars will look to right the ship this week as they host Mountain Brook (3-1, 1-1) as both the Spartans and the Jags look to establish themselves atop the 7A Region 3 pyramid.

Montevallo stayed perfect for another week with an easy 45-22 win over BB Comer and stayed steady at the No. 4 spot in the 3A poll, and even received one first-place vote this week. The Bulldogs received 199 total points in the vote, which was 30 more than they received a week ago. Montevallo faces Midfield this week at home, and still has games against current 3A No. 2 Gordo and 3A No. 6 Oakman looming in the weeks to come.

The new kids on the block this week are the Calera Eagles. Calera, fresh off a 45-22 win over Central-Tuscaloosa last Friday, moved to 4-0 (2-0) with the win and is 4-0 for the second time since 2013, when the Eagles finished the regular season at 9-1 and were the No. 3 overall team in 4A. Behind the play of a host of skill guys, including Jermaine Ross, Yatil Gant, Decorean Mickens, Trez Harris, Jaramy Dozier and Tyler Ferguson, all of whom have big play potential. The Calera offense is averaging 36 points per game heading into Week 5, which is the fourth-highest scoring average in the county and the highest among teams that have played four games to date. The Eagles have a big test this Friday, as the host rival Demopolis and try to stay perfect on the season.

Thompson was the only other county team to receive votes in this week’s poll, as Chelsea, which received 11 points in the Week 3 vote, lost to Benjamin Russell on Sept. 9.
