And then there was one.

After Spain Park and Thompson both lost their second game in a row on Sept. 16, and Calera was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten by Demopolis, the only remaining ranked team in the county in the Week 5 poll is 3A Montevallo, which stayed steady as the No. 4 team in the 3A class after it beat Midfield 35-20. The Bulldogs received 204 total points in the vote in the Week 5 poll, which is the most they have received in any one poll this year to date. While Montevallo was the only county team to pull in a ranking in the Week 5 poll, there were a number of other schools that received votes in their respective polls.

In the 7A class both Spain Park and Thompson still received votes. Spain Park, which was the No. 2 team in the 7A class in the Week 3 poll, still received 26 points in the vote, which placed the Jaguars as the No. 11 team in the class, just 12 points behind newly-minted No. 10 Mountain Brook. This comes just days after the Spartans beat the Jags on a last-second field goal.

Thompson, fresh off a backbreaking, last-second loss to Oak Mountain, still received one point in the 7A poll this week as well.

In the ultra-competitive 6A class, the Chelsea Hornets (4-1, 2-1) received a pair of votes after shelling region and cross-county opponent Pelham 55-35, which placed Chelsea in a tie for 15th-place among 6A teams along with Pinson Valley. The Hornets have displayed one of the most potent offenses in the state to this point in the season, averaging 42 points per game, however the defense is also giving up 30 points per game, turning almost every one of Chelsea’s games to date into a shootout.

In the 5A ranks both Calera and Briarwood received votes. Calera was ranked as the No. 8 team in the class a week ago, but was knocked unceremoniously from the ranks of the unbeaten by defending region champ Demopolis 38-13. Even with the loss, the Eagles still received 17 points in the Week 5 poll, which placed them as the No. 11 team in the class, 17 points behind No. 10 Central-Clay County. Briarwood also received two points in the 5A poll, which put them in a tie for 18th-place overall in the class. The Lions are alone atop the 5A Region 5 standings with a 3-1 (3-0) record, and travel to play 5A No. 4 Mortimer Jordan this week.

Montevallo travels to take on 4A Bibb County (4-1, 3-0) this Friday. Both the Bulldogs and the Choctaws look eerily similar on paper, as both are averaging more than 38 points per game both giving up more than 20 points per game. Montevallo is 9-24 all time against the Choctaws, but will attempt to buck against history this week in its quest to stay undefeated.
