Robert A. “Bob” Gilliland, age 71, of Montevallo, passed away Tuesday, Sep. 13.

He grew up in McDonald’s Chapel and graduated from Minor High School. Bob joined the U.S. Marine Corps after high school, and served in many countries, including Vietnam.

He was best known during his years in the food business, working at The Ensley Grill, Captain D’s, Hardee’s, Lee’s Chicken and Subway. In later years, he worked at Hoover Toyota until retirement, after which he was a substitute school bus driver for Shelby County.

He was member of Birmingham First Church of the Nazarene for many years, and then joined Westwood Baptist Church in Alabaster in later years. Hunting and fishing were his favorite sports, and he enjoyed traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. and Imogene Gilliland; and daughter, Kathy Gilliland.

Bob will be truly missed by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth “Beth” Evans Gilliland; son, Jerry Gilliland of Gadsden; daughter, Lisa Capra (Sam) of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Alaina Portera Okoniewski (Matt), both active duty USMC, Joseph Capra and Gianna Capra; brother, James Alford Gilliland (Brenda); sister, Jane Gilliam (Wayne); and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 6 at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo) from 6-6:45 p.m., with his memorial service following. On Friday, Oct. 7, guests will proceed from Rockco Funeral Home at 9 a.m. to his committal service at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, set for 9:30 a.m.
