Oak Mountain sweeps Shelby County XC Championship

Oak Mountain High School’s boys and girls cross-country teams won their division of the Shelby County XC Championship hosted by Thompson High School on Oct. 4 at Veterans Park in Alabaster.

In the boys 5K, OMHS (17:47 average) was followed by Thompson (18:04), Helena High School (18:42), Briarwood Christian School (18:43), Pelham High School (21:25), Calera High School (21:33), Chelsea High School (21:33) and Shelby County High School (22:25).

Thompson sophomore Brandon DeMarcus Lee turned in the fastest individual time of 16:37.37.

Lee’s top competition was Oak Mountain senior Caleb Van Geffen (17:14.02), Oak Mountain senior Chris Tate (17:31.15), Briarwood junior Zack Howard (17:36.63), Helena junior Blake Vaughn (17:44.37), Oak Mountain senior Matthew Hazelwood (17:49), Oak Mountain sophomore Jonah Barrett (17:55.08), Thompson junior Jacob Wyatt (18:05.25), Thompson senior Morgan Phillips (18:09.85) and Thompson junior Chandler Ferguson (18:22.18).

In the girls 5K, OMHS (22:17 average) was followed by Helena (24:01), Thompson (24:03), Chelsea (24:21) and Briarwood (25:05).

Oak Mountain freshman Evie Bell turned in the fastest individual time of 21:00.16.

Bell’s top competition was Pelham sophomore Katie Strozier (21:29.55), Oak Mountain freshman Adrienne Cooley (21:57.69), Pelham sophomore Meredith Bass (22:06.85), Helena freshman Abigail Ford (22:14.71), Helena freshman Ana Watters (22:28.37), Oak Mountain junior Anna McGowan (22:36.59), Oak Mountain sophomore Kate VanBeek (22:46.54), Chelsea freshman Teanna Cason (22:55.76) and Oak Mountain junior Mallory Staubach (23:07.98).

Middle school competitors ran 2 miles.

The top boys squad was Oak Mountain Middle School.

The top five individual runners were Brady Barton of Helena, Walker Cole of Oak Mountain, Owen Marquardt of Calera, Miles Brush of Chelsea and Stone Evers of Oak Mountain.

The top girls squad was Oak Mountain Middle School.

The top five individual runners were Emma Grace Phillips of Oak Mountain, Adrienne Goolsby of Briarwood, Sydney Stephenson of Riverchase Middle School, Meagan Atkinson of Helena and Emily Allen of Thompson.
