Lions earn first region win of season

ALABASTER – Kingwood Christian School’s football team picked up its first win—and possibly some momentum—against Coosa Valley Academy on Oct. 7, 46-13.
Freshman quarterback Tyler Henderson accounted for six touchdowns—one rushing and five passing—as the Lions improved to 2-4 on the season.
Coach Sheldon Ward said the win puts KCS in the mix for a postseason berth, but the Lions need to keep winning, starting with a visit to Lakeside on Oct. 14.
“We were able to pick up some mismatches throwing the ball,” Ward said about the win, and also pointed out that a lack of mistakes helped. “Hopefully, we can carry the momentum into next week and the rest of the season.”
Kingwood scored first in the game and never trailed.
The Lions stopped Coosa Valley on the game’s opening possession but had 12 men on the field during the punt, giving the visiting Rebels a first down.
KCS stopped Coosa Valley again, and this time on the punt, the snap sailed over the punter’s head and set up the Lions at the visitors’ 12-yard line.
A few plays later, Henderson scored on a quarterback sneak.
The Rebels tied the game at 7-all on a 53-yard run by Camden Knight.
After a short kickoff, Henderson settled into a groove with short, effective passes on plays that would become bigger gains later in the game.
Michael Williams gave the lead back to the Lions on a one-yard scoring run with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter.
It was all Kingwood from there.
Henderson tossed touchdown passes to Jontae King (from eight yards out), Drake Smith (60 yards) and Smith again (14 yards) before Coosa Valley scored again.
A 40-yard touchdown pass from Chase Carlee to Mason Houston made the score 33-13.
Kingwood then tacked on two more scores, an 11-yard pass from Henderson to Smith and a 21-yard pass from the same combination.
