Oak Mountain falls to Mountain Brook

NORTH SHELBY – The Oak Mountain Eagles will need a win over Spain Park on Oct. 21 to have a shot at making the playoffs after falling to the Mountain Brook Spartans 41-27 on Oct. 14.
“We were going to have to play a pretty perfect game tonight, and we were far from it,” said Oak Mountain head coach Cris Bell. “We’ve got to win (next week). That’s what it comes down to is you don’t want to back in, you want to play yourself.
“At the end of the day, it came down to they made stops and we didn’t,” Bell added. “In a game like that when it turns into a shootout, they had more bullets in the gun than we did.”
The turning point in the contest came when Mountain Brook’s Reid Hogue intercepted an Oak Mountain pass at the Spartans’ 20-yard line with 6:34 left in the contest with Mountain Brook leading 34-27.
A few plays later, the Spartans’ Sam Everette found the end zone from six yards out to put the visiting team on top 41-27.
Mountain Brook (6-2, 4-2 in Class 7A, Region 3) locked a playoff berth with the win, while the Eagles (3-5, 3-3) will need a win in its final region game next week to have a shot at the postseason.
Mountain Brook outgained the Eagles 500-305 in total offense. Oak Mountain quarterback Jackson Kimbrell completed 10-of-19 passing attempts for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Kimbrell also was the Eagles’ leading rusher, racking up 87 yards on 12 carries.
Ethan Duncan led Oak Mountain in receptions, ending the night with 68 yards on five catches.
Defensive leaders for the Eagles were Jackson Murphy, who recorded four solo tackles and nine assists, and Mingyu Le, who ended the night with five solo tackles and six assists.
Connor Wilson lit up the scoreboard first for the Eagles on a 13-yard touchdown run on Oak Mountain’s first possession of the game. Nick Carney added the PAT.
Receivers Ethan Duncan and Nathan Jones scored touchdowns on receptions of 50 yards and 37 yards, respectively from Kimbrell. Carney’s PAT was blocked on the first touchdown, and a 2-point conversion attempt failed, giving the Spartans a 21-19 halftime lead.
Carson Bobo added a touchdown for the Eagles in the third quarter when he reeled in a 20-yard pass from Kimbrell. Luke Percer added a 2-point conversion after the score.
