HELENA–The Jane B. Holmes Public Library is hosting a “Peanuts” themed Halloween Party to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the beloved animated special, “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown,” written by late “Peanuts” creator Charles M. Schulz. This classic holiday special first premiered on Oct. 27, 1966.

“It’s something festive and fun for the kids to enjoy,” said Friends of Helena Library member Crystal Watford. “We hope to bring in new and existing library patrons for this family-friendly event.”

Children are encouraged to wear costumes, visit various library stations for a surprise, bring a bag or bucket to carry your treasures, enjoy a snack, create a Peanuts themed craft, and hear a special reading of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” at the event, which is taking place on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.

“With so many electronic devices these days, it’s important to give kids an opportunity to take a digital break and visit the library for a fun program,” said Head Librarian Dan Dearing. “We are hoping that events like these will bring in patrons of all ages so they can come and see all that our library has to offer. Libraries like ours aren’t just about books anymore; the Jane B. Holmes Public Library has one of the largest DVD collections in Shelby County, as well as many online resources.”

Both Watford and Dearing are expecting a fun event, which was purposely scheduled in the evening so working families could participate together.

“In Helena, we have a lot of moms and dads who work in the Birmingham metro area, so we’re trying to schedule our events so folks can attend as a family,” said Watford. “I believe that bringing your children to the library not only sets a good example, but also fosters a lifelong love of reading.”

The Friends of the Helena Library will be asking for new members to join as well, which is as simple as filling out a form and attending a monthly meeting.
