NORTH SHELBY – A 21-year-old man was shot and killed by a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputy on Oct. 22.

The man, Nathaniel B. Dorough, allegedly charged at the deputy with a weapon and did not comply with an order to stop, according to an SCSO press release.

Shelby County 911 received a call at 10:16 p.m. Oct. 22 requesting deputies respond to a residence in the 6900 Block of Old Highway 280 to try to de-escalate a domestic situation involving a mentally ill person.

Upon arrival, the deputies spoke with the caller and were then confronted by the other family member, who was mentally ill. The deputy “used deadly physical force to protect himself and others,” according to SCSO.

Deputies attempted medical aid, and Chelsea Fire and Rescue paramedics also responded, but Dorough was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff John Samaniego and Sheriff’s Office investigators responded to the residence, and the multi-jurisdictional Shelby County Major Case Unit was assigned the responsibility of investigating the incident with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.

“This is a sad event, and I offer my deepest condolences to Nathaniel’s family and friends,” Samaniego said in the release. “Mental health issues are one of the biggest concerns facing our country and our county. The actions taken [Oct. 22] will be reviewed in depth by the district attorney’s office, and the sheriff’s office will be completely transparent and forthcoming with anything they need to complete their investigation.”
