HES raises more than $43,000 from Boosterthon fundraiser

HELENA–Helena Elementary School kindergartners could be seen making multiple laps around two separate tracks on the school’s playground on Oct. 26, but they weren’t just running for the fun of it.
HES students were participating in the Boosterthon Fun Run, which is a large fundraiser that helps raise money for the school while having lots of fun doing it.
For the ninth year in a row, HES faculty, students and parents came together for the Boosterthon Fun Run, as parents and teachers cheered on students as each lap completed raised more money for the school.
“This is the first time since 2012 that we’ve been able to have the event outside since it wasn’t raining,” said HES PTO Co-president Amber Bordelon. “It’s just been a lot of fun and we’ve had a lot more space. This year all the money raised will be going to new technology and science materials needed in the classrooms. All of the classrooms also have Smart boards so we will use the money for repairs on those as well.”
The theme for the Boosterthon Fun Run was “Backyard Box Office,” and students got a visit from a Minion while making laps to upbeat music.
How the fundraiser works is students get a pledge donation amount from parents or any other relatives who can pledge a certain amount of money per lap or donate a flat amount. As students made laps, HES teachers marked off the laps completed and the total amount continued to grow.
After all was said and done, Helena Elementary School raised more than $43,000 in the fundraiser.
After the Kindergarteners race was over, it was announced HES teacher Melanie Henderson’s class raised the most money after pledging $119 per lap.
Those students were rewarded by getting to spray silly string all over the Boosterthon Fun Run team.
The Boosterthon Fun Run program has served more than 1,900 schools nationwide in 38 states and was founded in Birmingham, according to Birmingham program director Andrew Endara.
In the days leading up to the fun run, students also received character lessons, participated in a pep rally and team huddles and each class came up with team names.
