ALABASTER – Leaders on the Alabaster City Council and in several city departments will not change for the next few years, as council members voted to reappoint them during a Nov. 8 meeting.

The meeting marked the first official actions for the city’s 2016-2020 City Council, which was elected in August, after the council members were sworn in the same night.

Alabama law requires city councils to elect a council president and president pro-tem every four years. The state also requires councils to appoint a city attorney, police chief, fire chief and city treasurer every four years and appoint a municipal court judge every two years.

Ward 6 Councilman Scott Brakefield will continue to serve as the council president for the next four years, after he was nominated for the position by Ward 1 Councilwoman Sophie Martin and approved by a unanimous vote.

The council president presides over the meetings and determines the flow of council work sessions.

“I want to thank my fellow council members for entrusting me to serve again as your council president,” Brakefield said. “That means a lot to me.”

Council members also unanimously elected Martin to serve as the council president pro tem, who serves as council president in the president’s absence. She was nominated by Ward 3 Councilwoman Stacy Rakestraw.

In addition to electing its officers, the Alabaster City Council also reappointed the following individuals to city positions for the next four years:

 

-Joseph Walden will continue to serve as the city’s municipal court judge.

-Jeff Brumlow will continue to serve as the city’s attorney and municipal prosecutor.

-Curtis Rigney will continue to serve as Alabaster’s police chief.

-Jim Golden will continue to serve as Alabaster’s fire chief.

-Marsha Massey will continue to serve as Alabaster’s treasurer.
