Hoover officials sworn in, approve name for sports facility

HOOVER – New Hoover municipal government officials took oaths of office on Nov. 7, and then approved a decision sure to be of interest to city residents.

The mayor and City Council elected by residents in August approved to name the city’s under-construction sports and events facility The Finley Center.

The Finley Center along with surrounding athletic fields, Hoover Metropolitan Stadium and an RV park will collectively be called the Hoover Metropolitan Complex.

Officials who took their oaths of office were Mayor Frank Brocato and City Council members Curt Posey, Place 1; Gene Smith, Place 2; John Lyda, Place 3; Mike Shaw, Place 4; Derrick Murphy, Place 5; Casey Middlebrooks, Place 6; and John Greene, Place 7.

Gene Smith was elected as the new president of the council, and Greene was elected as the president pro-tempore.

The council approved the appointment of several employees:

  • Margie Handley, city clerk.
  • Robert Yeager, city treasurer.
  • Phillip D. Corley Jr., city attorney
  • Brad Bishop, municipal judge, at a compensation of $80,000 annually.
  • Charlie D. Waldrep, municipal prosecutor, at a compensation of $75,000; with Nic Waddell and Brandon Prince as alternate prosecutors in the absence of the municipal prosecutor.
  • Magistrates Susan Fuqua, court director; Robin Griffin; Marsha Headley; Terica Henderson; Tiffaney Brewer; Anna McRae; Umang Patel; Darinda Poe; Jason Simpson; and Leandra Burks.
  • Regions Bank, Wells Fargo Bank and First National Bankers Bank as repositories for city.
  • Barfield Murphy Shank & Smith LLC for period of four years to conduct detailed examination of all books and accounts of the city and make a full report to the council.
  • Shaw as the City Council liaison to the Hoover Planning and Zoning Commission.
