ALPINE – The Westminster School at Oak Mountain boys’ basketball team participated in the Winterboro Dye, Culpepper and Briskey Tournament Nov. 21 and 22, and picked up their first win of the season in a consolation game win over Verbena High School 74-68.

In game one of the tournament that featured four teams, the Knights lost to Prattville Christian 73-31. Westminster scored just six points in three of the four quarters and managed just 13 points in the second quarter. They were outscored by an average of 10 points per quarter in the game. Sam Landers and Clay Hess led the way for the Knights as both had six points and grabbed two rebounds.

In the consolation game against Verbena, things went a lot better for Westminster. Early on the game looked similar to their first-round loss as Verbena outscored the Knights 16-12 in the first quarter, but a switch was flipped in the second and third quarter.

After not scoring 20 points in a single quarter on the season, the Knights offense exploded as they came out and scored 29 second quarter points and 24 third quarter points to take a 65-50 lead into the fourth quarter.

Verbena didn’t go away quietly as their defense woke up and their offense outscored Westminster 18-9 in the final quarter of play, but the Knights’ 53 combined points in the second and third quarters were just too much for the Red Devils to overcome. Westminster went on to pick up a 74-68 win and third place finish in the tournament, but more importantly their first win on the season.

Parker Mixon tallied 24 points and three rebounds to lead the Knights, while Wiley Boone added 19 points and Sam Bradford added 15 points and three more rebounds. Juwan Tyus was responsible for half of the Red Devils scoring with 34 points in the game.
