Just like the first boy’s poll, four county girl’s teams have been ranked in the top 10 of their respective poll. Spain Park, Thompson, Montevallo and Westminster at Oak Mountain all received the honor of being ranked in the first basketball rankings of the season.

The Lady Jags (6-3) were the highest ranked team coming in at No. 4 in 7A. The three losses don’t look so bad when you break it down to who Spain Park has lost to. Two of their three losses are to the No. 1 team 7A, Sparkman (12-1), 63-40 and 47-44. Their other loss is to 6A No. 1 Homewood who sits undefeated on the season at 8-0.  They have played possibly the toughest schedule of the young season with those three games alone, but have also beaten teams like Hewitt-Trussville, Montevallo, Hillcrest and Gadsden City.

Thompson (4-4) also squeaked inside the top 10 of the 7A rankings coming in at No. 9. Similar to Spain Park, the Warriors don’t have the best record in 7A, but they have played one of the tougher schedules. Two of their losses have come at the hands of John Carroll and the other two were to very good teams in Oak Mountain and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. They also have wins over Class 5A No. 5 Central-Tuscaloosa, as well as a redemption win against Oak Mountain and a win over a good Helena Huskies team.

Montevallo, who has the best record in the county at 6-1, came in as the second highest ranked squad in the county at the No. 6 spot in Class 3A. The ranking honestly might be a little low for how good the Bulldogs have played. The Lady Bulldogs’ only loss of the season came at the hands of 7A Spain Park back on Nov. 21. Since then they have rattled off five consecutive wins behind Lauren Lilly who has averaged close to 20 points per game.

Finally, the Westminster at Oak Mountain Lady Knights (5-1) have won three in a row and came in at No. 10 in the 1A rankings. It’s been Westminster’s defense early on that has sparked the season as they’ve held opponents to just 27 points per game.
