HARPERSVILLE – A Childersburg man walking to work in Harpersville was struck by a train and killed on Wednesday, Dec. 27.

Timothy Garrett, 43, worked at a fuel station in Harpersville, Police Chief Jimmy Macon said.

“He was walking the tracks on the Childersburg side crossing to the Harpersville side,” Macon said. “He walks because he doesn’t have a license.”

The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Macon said.

According to the Harpersville Police Department’s report, it appeared the train came upon Garrett at a crossing over the Coosa River. The victim probably tried to outrun the train across the bridge but could not, Macon said.

The train’s conductor contacted emergency responders, but Garrett was pronounced dead on the scene.

Harpersville police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office produced preliminary reports about the incident, Macon said, and Norfolk Southern, which owns and operates the train and tracks, will conduct an investigation.
