Alabama sweeps Iron Cup, remains undefeated against Auburn

PELHAM, Ala. – After Alabama shutout Auburn on 10-0 on Friday, Jan. 20, they responded with another strong performance and defeated the Tigers 8-3 on Saturday night to conclude Iron Cup weekend. With two wins this weekend, Alabama was crowned the 2017 Iron Cup Champions while improving their record to 19-0 all-time against Auburn. Captain Jon Lovorn was named the Iron Cup MVP after tallying seven points (4 G, 3 A) in two games.
The game was penalty-filled with over 77 minutes of penalties between the teams. It was the first time Alabama (38 minutes) took more than 25 penalty minutes since they played Oklahoma on Feb. 14, 2016 and registered 25 even. Auburn (39 minutes) was the first opponent to record more than 25 since they played Alabama last year and tallied 26 on Jan. 24, 2016.
The first call of the game was just 23 seconds into the game. Alabama’s Michael DeLise, took a two-minute penalty for roughing. Despite being on the penalty kill Alabama’s offense continued to storm Auburn’s goalie Hayden Harris. However, Harris kept Alabama off the board until the final seven minutes of the period when Jack Rooney found the back of the net. With 3:39 to go in the first, a hooking penalty was called on Auburn sending Alabama to the power play. Andrew Durkin scored on the power play for Alabama increasing to give UA a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The second period started off in a similar fashion, with an early Alabama penalty. In just the first 25 seconds of play, Lovorn was called for high sticking. While Alabama was still on the penalty kill, Auburns’ Tyler Brinckman hit Shane Welsh from behind.
Welsh dropped the gloves, and a commotion ensued. Welsh received a roughing and an unsportsmanlike penalty, while his teammate Charlie Corbett was called for holding. Brinckman took a cross checking minor, while the Tigers’ Patrick Neal received a slashing and unsportsmanlike call.
Auburn then scored twice to tie the game before Alabama answered with a goal from Lovorn with 6:12 on the clock. At the 11:42 mark another altercation broke out. This time, Neal was ejected for receiving his second unsportsmanlike of the game. Jerry Jordan took a roughing penalty.
Lovorn scored again with 1:35 on the clock, and Pierre Ouellette tallied even later in the frame to give UA a 5-2 lead at the second intermission. In the third, Alabama racked up the penalties with 16 minutes to the Tigers’ four, but still managed to extend its lead.
Just minutes into the third period, a minor penalty was called on Auburn’s Colin Fulks for cross checking. Shortly after, James Martin scored with assists from Griffin Butler and Michael DeLise, giving Alabama a four-goal lead. About seven minutes into the period, Alabama’s Felix Conrads scored his first collegiate goal.
With just 3:12 left to play, Alabama’s Jerry Jordan received two penalties, one for high sticking and one for unsportsmanlike misconduct. Fulks received a minor penalty at the same time for slashing. Chandler Brown scored Auburn’s last goal of the game with an assist from Braden Pichel and under five minutes left to play. Minutes later, Alabama’s Ben Geremski scored with assists from Taylor Joseph and Griffin Butler, resulting in the final score.
Alabama travels to New England next weekend for two games at Navy on Friday and Saturday and a Sunday matchup with Delaware. Puck drop on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
