PELHAM – Pelham Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board gathered at the pavilion in City Park on Saturday, Feb. 11, to install the library’s first Little Free Library.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that supports the movement to offer free books housed in small containers to members of local communities. The free library operates on a leave one, take one method.

Residents are encouraged to take a book, and leave another in its place. Residents may return the books they take, but they can keep them if they’d like. The Teen Advisory Board and the Pelham library donated 15 books to start off with.

“We’ll help make sure it stays stocked with a mix of kids and adult books,” said library director Mary Campbell.

A counter is installed in the container, built by technology services librarian Matt Griffin, to keep track of how many people are using the free library.

The Teen Advisory Board painted the container. The board consists of six teens – Thompson High School 10^th-grader Brian Hernandez, Pelham High School 10^th-grader Bethany Warden and Riverchase Middle School eighth-graders Shaun O’Neil, Dakota Brown, Jordyn England and Amari Springer.

Campbell thanked Parks and Recreation director Billy Crandall for allowing the free library to be installed in the park.

The library is looking for more opportunities to install Little Free Libraries throughout the city. Communities that are interested in having a Little Free Library installed in their neighborhood are encouraged to contact Campbell to request one.
