PELHAM – Four years after being discontinued, Boy Scout Troop 404 has returned to Pelham.

Committee Chairman Chris Combs said he and two other parents wanted to bring the troop back because they feel like Pelham deserves a Boy Scout troop. Aaron Heape serves as the scoutmaster and Kirk Toole is the treasurer.

“Our boys deserve a troop in their hometown,” Combs said. “We really want to emphasize the importance of community service and help make Pelham a better place to live.”

So far Troop 404, which is chartered by Scott Richards Insurance Agency, has 12 members. The troop meets weekly at the Pelham YMCA and goes on camping trips once a month.

Combs said the troop will pick a different place to go camping every month.

“If we keep going to the same place the boys will get bored with it, so we like to change it up,” Combs said. “We’ll go as far as Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida.”

Aside from camping, the troop will be busy attending workshops and going to summer camp.

This month the troop is traveling to Auburn University to participate in Merit Badge University, hosted by Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, where they will have an opportunity to earn a merit badge. In July, they will be attending a weeklong summer camp in Mentone.

“We have a big brother troop in Troop 2 in Helena,” Combs said. “When Troop 404 ended, a lot of the boys went there. They’re going to go on camping trips with us and teach our boys more about how to be a scout.”
