Helena Elementary celebrates Read Across America Day

HELENA–Helena Elementary School students filed into the cafeteria on Thursday, March 2, and it was evident what the students and faculty members were celebrating.
As if the Dr. Seuss “Cat in the Hat” hats or T-shirts that read, “I teach a thing or two at Helena Elementary” didn’t already give it away, the school was celebrating “Read Across America Day” which falls on the birthday of the late children’s book author Dr. Seuss.
HES students made custom shirts and hats and enjoyed juice boxes and cupcakes to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
Earlier in the day, guest readers from the city of Helena and other residents went to different classrooms to read a variety of Dr. Seuss books to students.
The day concluded with a large birthday party for Dr. Seuss in the cafeteria as all of the students sang “Happy Birthday” in unison and then listened to HES faculty members read passages from Dr. Seuss books.
Students got a big laugh when the teachers sang and danced to the song “Tooty Ta” to conclude the party.
Helena Kindergartener Gracie said her favorite thing about the day was the party for Dr. Seuss.
“My favorite Dr. Seuss book is ‘I can read with my eyes shut’ and my favorite thing was the birthday party,” Gracie said. “My favorite subject in school is reading.
Gracie’s classmate Aiden also agreed that his favorite part of the day was the birthday party.
“My favorite Dr. Seuss book is ‘Green Eggs and Ham,’” Aiden said.
Read Across America Day is celebrated nationally on March 2 to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday, as well as the joys of reading as thousands of schools across America celebrate the day.
