PELHAM – Upgrades to the BMX track at Oak Mountain State Park kicked off on Monday, March 18, according to Chad Scroggins, manager of Shelby County Development Services.

Scroggins said upgrades include lengthening the track to just over 1,100 feet, rebuilding and asphalting the turns, improving the concessions, bathrooms, adding additional lighting and improving fences.

The project is expected to be completed in May, in time for a race in June.

A longer track means that Oak Mountain BMX will be able to attract regional races that require tracks to be a certain length.

Scroggins said asphalting the turns will reduce the amount of maintenance required for the track. With additional lighting, Oak Mountain BMX will be able to host night riding for the general public two to three days per week.

The project is expected to cost $99,910. Shelby County is set to pay 90 percent of the cost, which amounts to $89,910, and Oak Mountain BMX will contribute 10 percent, which amounts to $10,000.

Oak Mountain BMX will be responsible for maintaining the track once the upgrades are completed.

Those who are interested in BMX can learn the basics by participating in riding clinics. The first two sessions are free for new riders and every one after that is $10. A rider’s first race is free also.

The track is always open for the public to ride, even if coaches aren’t present. However, track operators recommend that a parent is present if the rider is under 16 and riders should always wear a helmet.
