PELHAM – The Pelham City Council approved a $3.93 million bid, which includes six alternate bids, from Blalock Construction Company for the construction of the city’s new public library at a meeting on Monday, March 20.

Blalock Construction is also constructing the new middle school and recreation center.

Of the five companies who placed bids for the project, Blalock’s bid was about $100,000 less than the second, third and fourth bids, said Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood architect Bob Gray.

“As a city, you all got some really good, competitive bids,” Gray said.

Once construction begins, the facility will take about 10 months to complete. With a projected construction start date of April 1, the library will likely be completed by February 2018.

In other business, the council:

-Approved a Water Resource, Conservation and Emergency Plan for the city.

-Approved a resolution to amend the city’s Classification Pay Plan to include a 1.5-percent pay increase to every step. The cost of the adjustment was included in the FY 2017 budget.

-Approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Gary Waters to enter into a memorandum of agreement with Shelby County Water Services for use of the city’s water main along Shelby County 11.

-Approved a resolution to accept a donation of equipment and supplies from Colonial Pipeline to the Pelham Fire Department.
