The Montevallo City Council met on March 27 and approved the creation of a resolution to be sent to representatives in Congress.

The resolution will ask the Environmental Protection Agency not to defund the Brownfields Assessment Grant, which the city applied for in November 2016.

The resolution is being written in response to recently proposed budget cuts for the EPA by the Trump administration. The council is concerned this might mean cuts to or discontinuation of the Brownfields Assessment Grant.

The city was anticipating notification in the coming May as to whether or not it had received the grant. Steve Gilbert, Montevallo Chamber of Commerce executive director, believed the grant could bring as much as $300,000 of federal funds to Montevallo.

The program would fund the examination of properties in Montevallo to determine if they are environmentally safe, and if they are not, what must be done to fix them. The city planned to use the information from these tests to plan the redevelopment of any areas necessary and draw more business into Montevallo.

  • A proclamation was signed to create Parental Alienation Awareness Day in Montevallo. The day aims to raise awareness of parental alienation, also called hostile aggressive parenting, which could create negative relationships between children and parents.
