ALABASTER – Alabaster Church of God plans to host its annual Easter egg drop for those looking for a unique way to collect Easter eggs.

Several thousand plastic eggs filled with candy will drop from a helicopter over the field next to the church building on April 15 beginning at noon for children ages 12 and under.

Alabaster Church of God Pastor Ken Stroup said the event has been held for several years, and is a good way for families in the community to come out and enjoy a family-friendly activity.

“We like to be able to give back to the community,” Stroup said. “Kids love seeing the helicopter, and collecting the eggs. The helicopter seems to make the biggest impact.”

Stroup said in previous years the church has dropped eggs from a fire truck, and even a hot air balloon, but the most enjoyable for egg hunters is seeing the eggs descend from the helicopter.

The festivities begin at noon, and include inflatables, games, free popcorn and snow cones.

The Easter bunny will also be at the event for those wanting their picture taken.

The egg drop will begin around 1:30 p.m. with a series of three egg drops for various age groups, according to Stroup.

“We break up the egg drops so kids in each age range can get as many eggs as they would like,” Stroup said. “The younger kids will go first, and then we will have two more egg drops for the older kids.”

The Easter egg drop is one of two large community-wide events the church hosts each year.

Stroup said a family-friendly festival is held in the fall, and the Easter helicopter event is held in the spring.

“Our goal is to let the community have an event they can come and do together as a family,” Stroup said. “I came to the church in 2009 as pastor, and there was not a big Easter celebration. So, we started having one, and we like to have people come and have a good time.”

In 2016, Stroup estimates roughly 2,000 people attended the egg drop.

For those interested, an Easter Sunday service will be held at the church on April 16 at 10:45 a.m.

Alabaster Church of God is located at 530 1st Ave. W. in Alabaster.
