ALABASTER- The Friends of the Albert L. Scott Public Library raised over $1,500 for the library’s children’s programs through their bi-annual book and bake sale on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9.

According to Friends of the Albert L. Scott Public Library Publicity Chair Amanda Turner, Friends of the Library has hosted two book and bake sale events since 1983.

“Our goal is to just support the library, and our primary focus is to support their children’s programs here. Any extra money leftover meets the other needs that the library has,” Turner said. “We’ve also reupholstered some chairs, and we always put out poinsettias during the holidays.”

Turner said about half of the books sold were from donations made by community members throughout the year. The other half comes from books the library has culled.

According to Turner, the Albert L. Scott is always open to book donations.

“You just simply bag them or box them up and drop them off at the front desk, and they’ll give you a receipt if you need it,” Turner said.

Active Friends members were able to get an early sneak peek at the event on Friday, April 7. Teachers and student teachers were also able to purchase three books for $1 with their work or school identification badges.

Because they attract so many people, Turner said the book and bake sales prove the point that the library is a necessary and valuable asset for the city of Alabaster.

“This is a fabulous thing to become involved with, because our library is important to the community,” Turner said. “The more people we can get to come to it, the more leverage we have in getting our city government to invest in us.”
