On April 8, students across UM’s campus got an early start to perform volunteer work throughout the Montevallo community. This work was part of the annual Big Event, a communitywide service project organized by the Student Government Association.

This year, 515 students from 33 different student groups and athletic teams completed 40 jobs for local businesses, organizations and citizens. According to Jenny Bell, director of Student Life, one-fifth of the undergraduate student body participated.

Student Justin Williams, SGA director of social services, organized much of the event in the weeks prior by assisting Bell with assigning student organizations and coordinating work sites.

“I believe in giving back to the people and the community that gives to you,” said Williams. “Montevallo has given the students, faculty and staff here at the University so much.”

SGA President Hunter Huie also played a large role in organizing the event. It was his fourth time participating in the project, having served as both a volunteer and an organizer in past years.

“One’s time in college can be trying, both scholastically and personally, so it feels good to set aside your own concerns and focus on the needs of others,” said Huie. “Plus, especially in a small town like Montevallo, students can immediately see the impact of their work.”
