NORTH SHELBY – Oak Mountain Elementary School first grade students held a special celebration for their moms on Friday, May 12.

The school held its annual Mother’s Day Tea, with mothers of all first grade students invited for programs held in classrooms.

To begin the program in Cammie Eanes’ classroom, about 20 students escorted their mothers to seats at tables that they had decorated, then served them snacks and drinks.

The part of the program that evoked the most emotion was when students took turns reading aloud letters they had written to their moms.

The letters were sweet, thoughtful and humorous all at the same time:

•“You give me money for Kona Ice.”

•“I love you so much because you tuck me in at night.”

•“I love you because you are pretty and a good driver.”

•“Dear mom, I love when we cuddle together because you are so cuddly.”

In between readings of letters were various songs the students performed.

Students made decorations related to the holiday for the tables and walls in the classrooms, and the halls, said Eanes, who added that she attended a Mother’s Day Tea before she began teaching with her son, Jacob, now a senior at Oak Mountain High School.

Eanes said the occasion is part of the social studies curriculum for celebrating holidays.

“We’re teaching them how to plan a party,” Eanes said.

The students read a poem then watched a slideshow with images from activities throughout the school year as the summer break nears.

Eanes celebrated the day with her daughter, seventh grader Molly, and mother, Judy Bryant of Trussville, in attendance.

“This is my favorite day of the year, but I also dread it because I have to say goodbye,” Eanes said.
