ALABASTER – If the most recent Thompson Middle School boys’ and girls’ soccer seasons are indicative of the future, Thompson High School soon may be adding some new hardware to its trophy case.

Combined, the two teams went 24-2-1 in the 2017 regular season, accounted for a total of 20 shutouts and several trophies and accolades.

The teams’ stellar seasons earned them a trip to a May 22 special-called Alabaster Board of Education meeting, where they were recognized by the School Board for all of their accomplishments.

Each member of the team was honored individually, and received a certificate of appreciation from the School Board members.

The TMS boys’ soccer team finished the 2017 regular season undefeated with a record of 13-0-1, finished first in the Lakeshore Shoot-Out tournament and finished second in the Buccaneer Bash tournament.

The boys’ team outscored their opponents by a whopping 79 goals scored by 14 different players, including five players who had “hat tricks,” which occurs when a player scores three consecutive goals for their team.

The two TMS goalkeepers only allowed one goal during the regular season, and accounted for 14 shutouts.

“This type of teamwork is what lead to an overall record of 20 wins, one loss, one tie and the 7A Middle School League Championship,” said Alabaster City School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers.

At the end of the middle school season, four TMS players were pulled up to either the THS junior varsity or varsity teams.

“Out of the four years of the TMS girls’ team’s existence, this is the program’s most talented and rewarding season yet, with its continued improvement each year,” Vickers said. “It was not only this group’s talent that brought them this far, it was their positive attitude, dedication to working hard each day and overall cohesiveness of the team that made this year such a success.”
