Helena Intermediate School teacher Lauren Davis was recently selected to serve on the state superintendent’s teacher cabinet.

Davis, who teaches reading, language arts, and social studies, began her service on the cabinet made up of 24 teachers across the state on May 23.

“I am honored to work alongside accomplished professionals from different backgrounds with different areas of expertise,” Davis said. “I look forward to collaborating with the entire cabinet to grow as an educator and help provide the students of Alabama with the best education possible.”

Davis went through an application process to be selected for the cabinet after originally being nominated by a parent to the local school board. Davis was then chosen by the state superintendent’s office to serve on the cabinet.

The purpose of the teacher’s cabinet is to provide a direct avenue of communication with the state superintendent to discuss important issues regarding education, according to a press release about the cabinet.

The teachers will meet with State Superintendent Michael Sentance twice each semester, and will also be invited to attend or speak at events pertinent to elevating the teaching profession.

There were several hundred applicants reviewed by ALSDE staff and chosen by the state superintendent.

The selected teachers will serve on the cabinet for one year terms, according to the release.

Davis said she is looking forward to her time on the cabinet, and collaborating with other teachers to advance the teaching profession, and promote the best instructional practices.

Davis has been in education for five years. She is married to her husband, Todd, and the couple are expecting their first baby, ‘Lily’ Margaret Davis in November.
