HELENA–“Wow that’s a ton of trash,” can be said quite literally for the city of Helena as the final numbers have been released from the city’s annual “Heavy Waste Disposal Day” at the end of May.

On May 20, Helena residents had the opportunity to dispose of items that would not go in the regular household garbage including large items like old mowers, old vacuum cleaners, old chairs and other large items.

From 7 a.m. to noon the city of Helena and Republic Services hosted the free annual “Heavy Waste Disposal Day” at the lower area parking lot at the Helena Sports Complex and people showed up in droves.

The city urged residents to take advantage of the free opportunity to haul unwanted junk to the sports complex for disposal, as public works staff was on site to direct and assist with the clean up day.

Due to environmental regulations, no chemicals, petroleum, corrosives, batteries, tires or paints were accepted. Other prohibited items included yard debris and commercial contractor debris.

City officials confirmed that more than 15 tons of trash was collected in only a number of hours at the sports complex.
