John “Sidney” Vick
Nashville, Tennessee

John “Sidney” Vick, born Feb. 10, 1932, passed away June 13 in Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 85.

The visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., Friday, June 16 at Lester’s Chapel Church. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Montevallo Cemetery. Bolton Funeral Home is directing.

Sidney was a native of Shelby County, where he lived most of his life, and was a member of Lester’s Chapel United Methodist Church. From childhood, he was known for his quick wit and love of a good laugh. He graduated from Shelby County High School in 1952, and briefly attended Auburn University before serving in the U.S. Army.

During this time, he met his sweetheart, Joan, at the Calera Corner Cafe and they were married once his service ended. Sidney and Joan moved from Columbiana to Montevallo, where they resided for more than 40 years. He went on to operate his own businesses, including an excavating business, Shelby County Concrete, B & V Veneer, and was the original owner of Custom Moulding and Fine Millwork.

Sidney was admired for his work ethic, business sense, and most of all he was a master craftsman in woodworking and fine antique furniture reproductions (a skill begun as a hobby). He had a talent for learning and mastering anything he took on, such as carpentry (he even built a mahogany boat), mechanics (he could rebuild an engine), he was a self-taught musician and artist, and he mastered the Rubik’s Cube.

He was a modest man with a beautiful singing voice that we only discovered once Alzheimer’s took away his timidity and he began to sing to us. Most importantly, he was a wonderful husband and a loving father, father-in-law, and grandfather.

Mr. Vick is preceded in death by his parents, Grady Horace Vick and Maurine Hartsfield Vick; and his great-nephew, James Black.

He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Joan Logan Vick; two daughters, Teresa Osborne (John) and Wanda Burchfield (Mark); five grandchildren, Clare Osborne Jones (Clay), Sarah Osborne, Katie Osborne, Victoria Burchfield, and Daniel Burchfield, all residents of Nashville, Tennessee; brother, Harold Vick of Columbiana; and two nieces and great nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lester’s Chapel Church, 7800 Chelsea Highway, Columbiana, Alabama 35051.
