VANDIVER – On Monday, July 10, Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force investigators were contacted by Shelby County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies in reference to the seizure of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, Suboxone strips, and various prescription pills in the 21000 block of Shelby County 55, in Vandiver.

SCDETF investigators identified Nathan Smith, 25, of Vandiver, as allegedly having possession of the above narcotics, and was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 12, in the parking lot of Brookwood Hospital in Homewood.

Smith remains in the Shelby County Jail on the charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia. Smith is being held in the jail on a $7,000 bond.

“Mr. Smith was in possession of 1.44 grams of Fentanyl. It takes less than 2 milligrams to be fatal. Therefore, theoretically, Mr. Smith was potentially in possession of nearly 720 fatal doses of Fentanyl,” Task Force Commander Lt. Clay Hammac wrote in a release. “Our current drug laws must evolve to reflect the severity of Fentanyl possession and trafficking.”
