ALABASTER – The city will pay about $1,500 to install rumble strips on a road off Shelby County 11 after residents in the area expressed concern about speeding drivers.

The Alabaster City Council voted unanimously during its July 10 meeting to approve up to $1,500 for the project on Cohill Drive, which will be completed by the Alabaster Public Works Department.

Once completed, the rumble strips will be made of raised thermal plastic, not asphalt, and will look to slow traffic on the residential roadway, said Alabaster Ward 1 Councilwoman Sophie Martin.

“This came about as a request from the residents due to speeding concerns on Cohill Drive,” Martin said. “After public works went out there, they determined rumble strips would be the most effective way to address the issue.”

Cohill Drive is off Shelby County 11 in Alabaster’s Simmsville community, and is a densely populated residential area.

“I believe this will have a big impact on Ward 1, and will be appreciated by the residents,” Martin said.
