Virginia Ann (McGhee) Sumners of Vincent, passed away at Bethany House in Auburn, early Friday morning, July 21.

Virginia was born Sept. 1, 1929 to Isaac Alston and Mary Onita McGhee in Childersburg. She was greatly loved by her family, who mourn her loss, but celebrate her wonderful life.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Ronald Clyde Sumners; her brother, Bill McGhee; and three sisters, Elaine Wolfe, Ruth Chappell, and Hilda O’Bryant.

She is survived by her husband, James Clyde Sumners; son, Joe Arthur Sumners (wife Lynn); two brothers, John McGhee (wife Georgia Faye) and Jimmy McGhee; four grandchildren, Katie Kostakis (husband Jonathan), Sam Sumners, Lacey Updegraff (husband John), and Tucker Sumners; and three great-grandchildren, Ella Updegraff, Jackson Updegraff, and Haddie Updegraff.

Virginia was salutatorian of her class at Childersburg High School in 1948. Later that year, she married Clyde, beginning a loving relationship that lasted until her death – almost 69 years.

She was devoted to her family and took joy in her sons, Ron and Joe, their wives, Prissy and Lynn, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved, and was loved, by her brothers and sisters, her Sumners family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, and over 30 nephews and nieces.

Virginia decided to attend nursing school at the age of 38 and worked as a nurse for over 20 years, where she enjoyed caring for her patients. She loved the Lord and was devoted to her church. She taught a women’s Sunday School class for many years and sang in the choir at Vincent First Baptist Church.

She was an intelligent, gentle, kind, compassionate, and giving person who lived a life of purpose and consequence. She will be missed by all who knew her.

The funeral service will be Sunday, July 23 at 2 p.m. at Vincent First Baptist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Vincent City Cemetery.
