The U.S. National Weather Service of Birmingham recently issued a heat advisory and a flash flood warning for Shelby County on Wednesday, July 26.

Both the heat advisory and the flash flood warning went into effect in the early afternoon. The heat advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. and the flash flood warning is in effect until 4:15 p.m.

The heat advisory is in effect for the entirety of Shelby County, as well as the majority of the central Alabama area.

Meteorologist Tara Goggins said the flash flood warning mainly affects the northwest portion of Shelby County, particularly in the Hoover and Vestavia Hills areas. According to Goggins, the Weather Service has already received several reports of flooding in that area.

The U.S. National Weather Service urged residents to stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting clothing, take frequent breaks if working outside and limit time outdoors.

Goggins urged motorists in areas affected by flooding to stay cautious and alert and to never drive on a road that is flooded.
