CHELSEA – Five people were injured in a wreck the afternoon of Thursday, July 27, in a construction zone on U.S. 280.

The wreck occurred at 2:34 p.m. at the intersection with Shelby County 39 in Chelsea, according to Senior Trooper Johnathan Appling with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Two vehicle occupants and three pedestrians were injured, Appling said.

Denita Renee Cameron of Chelsea, who was in a 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Katesa Michelle Vick Boyette of Birmingham, who was in a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, were both transported to UAB Hospital.

The three injured pedestrians, all of whom were transported to Grandview Medical Center, were Billy Deon Rhodes of Ozark, Shelly Donovan Richards of Midland City and Cory Darnell Screws of Eufaula.

No information about the conditions of the victims was available as of Friday, July 28.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office issued a news release on July 27 stating the incident forced the closure of the roadway and encouraging motorists to seek alternate routes and avoid the area because of heavy traffic congestion.
