HOOVER – During her short time as a resident at Alabaster’s Shelby Ridge and Rehab Select nursing home, Katherine Moorer has become known as a karaoke aficionado, and has even worked make the activity a mainstay at the facility.

“Karaoke is her joy for all of us,” Shelby Ridge social worker Jessica Casey said in Moorer’s biography on the Alabama Nursing Home Association’s website. “Katherine Moorer is delightful. From singing karaoke, to playing bingo, to sharing humorous memories with other residents, she is full of joy.”

Others at Shelby Ridge and across the state have taken notice of Moorer’s passion for life.

Earlier this year, Moorer was crowned the winner of the Miss Shelby Ridge and Rehab Select pageant, and moved on to the state competition on July 31 at Hyatt Regency-The Wynfrey Hotel. Because of her performance in the state pageant, Moorer earned the title of first runner-up, second only to the winner: Sarah Scott of Westside Terrace Health and Rehab in Dothan.

The top 10 finalists, selected from the field of 50 contestants, had individual interviews with the panel of celebrity judges before competing on stage for the crown. All other contestants in attendance were part of the honor court and were individually recognized during the pageant.

Moorer, who has been at Shelby Ridge for about six months, lived in Mobile for many years, raised her son as a single parent and said she views her grandmother, Opal, as her hero.

Moorer said Shelby Ridge has helped her to stay socially active and engaged in the community.

“They’re always there to help you. We do fun things, we do things like this (pageant),” she said after earning the first runner-up spot. “Your life is what you make it, and I try to make mine the best I can.”
