James “Jim” Delano Nielsen, age 72, of Calera, born in Stoughton, Wisconsin and raised in Brooklyn, Wisconsin, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Jim graduated from Evansville High School and furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin, earning a degree in mechanical engineering. He began his mining career in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota and continued his career in Gillette, Wyoming, Marion Illinois, Jasper, and Grants, New Mexico. Along his many stops, he and his family enjoyed traveling, snow mobiling, golfing, hunting, fishing, boating, and spending time together. He retired from mining in 2008. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling, camping and motorcycling.

In 2013 Jim and Sally moved to Calera to be closer to family. While living in Calera he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He especially loved watching Caleb play sports and Ansley performing in dance competitions. He loved spending time with his close friends and watching Alabama Football.

Jim and Sally were members of the First United Methodist Church of Alabaster. Jim actively donated his time to the church and loved spending time with his church family.

His survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Sally Nielsen; children, Chris Nielsen (Roxanne) and Carey Easley; grandchildren, Caleb and Ansley Nielsen; niece, Laurie Nielsen; and sister-in-law, Margaret Brigham.

A visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 12 at the First United Methodist Church of Alabaster in the Fellowship Hall with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m., in the sanctuary at the church.
