COLUMBIANA – Shelby County renewed three existing digital service agreements, which allow companies to offer services such as internet and television, but may not renew an agreement with Zito Media.

The renewal of existing agreements with AT&T, Charter Communications and Bright House Networks were approved by the Shelby County Commission at its meeting on Monday, Aug. 14.

Shelby resident Sarah Ziegler addressed the commission about her problems, dating back to 2014, with Zito Media, which also holds an agreement with the county and services more rural areas of the county.

“The problem I have with them is this is an ongoing issue,” Ziegler said. “Nothing has changed. In fact, it has progressively worsened.”

Reginald Holloway, manager of community services for the county, said his department has heard other complaints about Zito Media.

“Zito has been notified and has been slow to respond,” Holloway said. “That is the ongoing issue the county has with its cable provider, and we’re in a position where we’re going to have make a decision going forward.”

County officials could decide to not renew its agreement, which would prevent Zito from operating in the county.

As part of his report to the commission, Shelby County Manager Alex Dudchock gave updates on several ongoing or upcoming projects, including an expansion of the Shelby County Courthouse, which has a targeted bid date of Dec. 5.

“The courthouse will still be in operation (during construction), but the floors that are in operation will be determined by construction,” Dudchock said.

After the meeting was adjourned, commissioners met with other officials for a work session for a budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The commission will hear from department heads at upcoming meetings and work sessions, and a vote on a new budget is expected at the Sept. 25 meeting before the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
