ALABASTER – Thompson High School student Tyger Quarles is no stranger to being in front of a crowd, but he found himself at the front of the room for a different reason during an Aug. 14 Alabaster Board of Education meeting.

Instead of wowing the audience with his public speaking prowess, as is normally the case in such situations, Quarles listened on as Alabaster School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers read out a lengthy list of accomplishments.

“He is a great young man,” Vickers said. “He embodies everything we want to see in our high school seniors.”

Quarles, who is the son of Alabaster BOE member Ty Quarles, recently was chosen to represent Thompson’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter at the 2017 Alabama FBLA convention. While at the state convention, Tyger was selected as one of the top public speakers in Alabama, and will represent THS, Alabaster City Schools and the state of Alabama as part of an elite group of students who will perform, speak and compete on a national level soon at the FBLA United States convention in Anaheim, California.

Quarles also was recently selected to take part in the Envision Law Program at Stanford University, where he will have a chance to test his legal skills among fellow seniors looking to attend Stanford Law School.

Through the Envision Law Program, Tyger will be able to learn from Stanford Law School faculty, get a feel for life at law school and take a case from evidence to a mock trial at the San Francisco Superior Court.

Tyger received a certificate of recognition from Vickers and the School Board members during the Aug. 14 meeting for his slew of accomplishments.

“He is a wonderful student, he has a heart of gold and he loves people,” Ty Quarles said. “I couldn’t be more proud as a father, not just because of the academic stuff, but for the passion and heart he has for other people.”
