ALABASTER – The city added two new households to its ranks on Aug. 28, as the Alabaster City Council agreed to annex the properties into the city limits.

Council members voted unanimously during the meeting to annex 958 Kent Dairy Road and 103 Forest Parkway into the city after the homeowners approached the city this summer to request the annexations to allow their children to attend the Alabaster City School System.

Before the annexations were approved, the Kent Dairy Road and Forest Parkway properties were are surrounded by Alabaster’s city limits, but were considered unincorporated Shelby County.

The Kent Dairy property will be a part of the city’s Ward 7, and the Forest Parkway property will be in Ward 6, according to the resolutions approved by the council.

In order to be zoned for the Alabaster City School System, families must reside inside the city’s limits.

Although the ACS academic year began before the annexation request could be voted on by the City Council, ACS agreed to allow children in the two homes to attend the city’s schools for up to one semester while the annexation request is processed, Alabaster City Manager Brian Binzer said previously.

The Alabaster Planning and Zoning Department had already reviewed the annexation requests, and did not express any concerns with the council approving the requests.

The two recent annexations were among several annexation requests the city received this summer, as parents are looking to enroll their children in the Alabaster City School System, Binzer said.
