Lauris June Mattina Stewart of Montevallo, died at home Sunday, Sept. 17. She was 88 years old.

She was born March 12, 1928 in Biloxi, Mississippi. She attended public schools in Biloxi, graduating from Biloxi High School in 1946. She attended Draughon‘s Business College of Jackson, Mississippi, finishing in 1948.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hattie and Floyd Mattina of Biloxi, Mississippi; and her sister, Melanie Mattina Kolflat of Austin Texas.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Dr. John W. Stewart, Sr.; sons, John, Jr. (Kathy Stewart), Glenn (Kelly Stewart), and Kevin; grandchildren, Kristen Gannon (Brad Gannon), Mary Ann Holt (David Holt), Alan Stewart, and Meghan Stewart; and great grandchildren, Ellis, Ben, and Abigail Gannon, and Lukas Stewart.

Activities included serving as medical stenographer at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, clerk to the Florida State Senate, in Tallahassee, Florida, big sister to the University of Montevallo chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta, and choir member in the First United Methodist Church choir. She was also a member of the Montevallo Evening Garden Club, the Faculty Wives Bridge Club, and the Joy Circle of the FUMC.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo). Her funeral service will be Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. at Montevallo First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lawton Higgs and Rev. Buddy Freeman to officiate. Burial will follow at Montevallo City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lauris and John Stewart Endowed Scholarship fund at the University of Montevallo.
