NORTH SHELBY – A new ALDI location is opening at the former site of hhgregg off U.S. 280.

Troy Marshall, ALDI Mt. Juliet Divisions vice president, said the grocery chain keeps costs down through steps including displaying products in their boxes, requiring customers to deposit a quarter for a shopping cart that is refunded upon its return and encouraging customers to bring reusable grocery bags.

“We keep our costs down with a simple approach to retailing. ALDI doesn’t have hidden costs because we choose to save shoppers money rather than have non-essential grocery store services,” Marshall said. “Those savings are always passed on to our shoppers.”

The new location, at 4639 U.S. 280, near the shopping center that includes Chuck E. Cheese’s, is planned to open before the end of the year, Marshall said.

Construction began in late September, Marshall said and added that ALDI stores typically have 10,000-11,000 square feet of sales floor space and four to five aisles.

With a streamlined, cost-saving approaching to staffing, ALDI employs about 15-20 people at each store, Marshall said.

ALDI offers competitive wages and benefits, staff working at least 25 hours per week receives full health insurance benefits and dental coverage, and all ALDI employees are invited to participate in the company’s 401(k) program, Marshall said.

The new look of ALDI stores delivers on customers’ desire for a modern and convenient shopping experience with a focus on fresh items, Marshall said.

“All of our new stores, including the upcoming Birmingham store, will also feature a modern design, open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials – such as recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting,” he said. “ALDI saves shoppers money on the groceries they buy most, including fresh produce, meat, bread and dairy, along with household items, for up to 50 percent less than traditional grocery stores. What really makes us stand out is that we consistently deliver premium products – organics, USDA Choice beef, our liveGfree gluten-free product line and baby items under our Little Journey brand – at everyday low prices. We’ve learned that while our low prices may attract first-time customers, they become loyal fans because of our quality and value.”
