ALABASTER – The Alabaster Parks and Recreation office is now operating out of Veterans Park after a black mold discovery at the city’s historic depot building forced the department to relocate.

Parks and Rec employees officially opened its new temporary office in Veterans Park to the public on Nov. 6, the city announced on Nov. 5. The new location is in a modular building on the right end of the park’s front parking lot.

The decision to move came after a repair crew discovered black mold inside the depot building next to Buck Creek at Warrior Park in September, which has housed the Parks and Rec department for the past several years.

Upon further investigation, crews discovered the black mold in the building was more extensive than originally thought, according to Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon.

Handlon said the city moved as quickly as possible to get the modular building in place to get city employees and Parks and Rec customers out of the mold-infested building. All Parks and Rec business will now be handled from the Veterans Park location.

The modular building at Veterans Park will serve as a temporary home for the Parks and Rec Department while the city determines a long-term solution, Handlon said.
