HOOVER – For the second year in a row, students at Spain Park High School are gearing up for a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Nov. 29.

Money raised from the tournament will benefit seniors at Spain Park.

“Our Students Scholarship Foundation is a registered non-profit with the mission of raising money to help Spain Park seniors go to college, who otherwise are not able to afford it,” said Tanya Gupta, who is helping organize the basketball tournament. “In the past three years, we have given out over $27,000. We will also be holding a parent-date night, dinner and a show on Dec. 16 at Spain Park, which will be called ‘Holidays at the Park.’”

Gupta said the tournament is open to anyone interested, but it must be a team of three.

“Teams of three are entered and compete in the tournament,” Gupta said. “The first place team wins gift cards, and we will be selling tickets to come watch. Tickets are only $3.”

Gupta said the idea for the tournament first originated in 2016, during a Students Scholarship Foundation meeting.

“We wanted to come up with new ideas for raising money so we could give out more money, so we talked about it and came up with the idea to host a basketball tournament,” she said.

The cost for each team to participate is $21 per team, and sign-ups for the tournament are based on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“We are really looking forward to this basketball tournament,” Gupta said. “I think people enjoy getting to spend the afternoon watching their friends compete for a great cause. People love our foundation and what we stand for, and we really get the crowd excited about the game.”
