ALABASTER – Kingwood Church’s “The Gospel According to Scrooge” recently had its opening night on Friday, Dec. 1. Family ministries and outreach pastor Joel Sims said “The Gospel According to Scrooge” is a version of the classic Charles Dickens novella, “A Christmas Carol,” that is retold in a way that incorporates biblical principles.

“Basically, ‘The Gospel According to Scrooge’ is a live theatrical event in the community that presents the classic Dickens story with a gospel twist,” Sims said.

“Yes, there are Christian themes and wholesome values, but in this version, there is the gospel and Jesus,” Sims continued. “It’s more explicitly stated, how the transformation happens in Scrooge. The message is the same for everybody. We all need a heart transformation, and that comes through the work of Jesus.”

Sims said “The Gospel According to Scrooge” is a long-standing church tradition, and this is the church’s 30th consecutive year to perform it.

“It started out as a smaller production. It changes a little bit every year, but the main story stays the same. It’s consistent and fun,” Sims said. “For us, it’s like celebrating Christmas every year. In some ways, it’s a tradition, and in some ways, it’s different every year.”

As it has grown over the years, Sims said “The Gospel According to Scrooge” attracts a large crowd and many people.

“We’re really surprised at how many people come for the first time each year,” Sims said.

While “The Gospel According to Scrooge” is free, Sims said the church is encouraging everyone to bring an offering, which will benefit ministries in the state.

“Every single dollar that comes in goes back into the community,” Sims said. “Over the years, we’ve raised over $350,000 for ministries throughout Alabama.”

Performances of the “Gospel According to Scrooge” were held on Dec. 1-3 and will be held again at 7 p.m. on Dec. 8-10. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to arrive early to get good seats.
