Snow shuts down local schools, offices

All Shelby County offices, all local school districts and some private businesses are closed in the wake of a snowstorm that began on the morning of Friday, Dec. 8.

According to intern meteorologist Meredith Wyatt, The Birmingham National Weather Service has reports of up to three inches of snow in Shelby County and said there is a possibility that the area could receive up to five inches of snow before the day is over.

Wyatt said snow is now sticking to roadways. Because of the icy conditions, Wyatt encouraged all central Alabama residents stay off the roads and avoid driving if at all possible.

“We have gotten reports of wrecks, mainly on I-65 South,” Wyatt said. “We’re urging people to stay home and enjoy the weather

Law enforcement agencies from several cities listed the following areas as closed or hazardous due to road conditions:

 

Alabaster

–First Avenue West from Navajo Trail to Shelby County 17 (Closed)

–The intersection of 10th Avenue Street Northwest and Fifth Avenue Northwest (Closed due to fallen power lines)

–Third Court Southwest (Closed due to down power lines)

–Simmsville Road at the I-65 overpass

–Shelby County 68

–Kent Dairy Road

–Alabama 119 near Veteran’s Park

–Shelby County 17 near Creek View Elementary School

–Seventh Avenue Northwest

–Olde Town Way

–Olde Town Lane

–The intersection of Shelby County 87 and U.S. 31

–The intersection of Shelby County 17 and Butler Road

–Shelby County 95 from First Avenue West and Industrial Road

–The intersection of Fulton Springs Road and Old Highway 31

–Dogwood Trail

–Streets in the Siluria neighborhood

 

Harpersville

–Alabama 76

 

Helena

–South Shades Crest Road

–Shelby County 13

 

Montevallo

–Shelby County 26 between U.S. 31 and Shelby County 70 in the Pea Ridge area

–Shelby County 10

 

Pelham

–The intersection of Shelby County 52 East and Shelby County 11

–I-65 overpasses

–Pelham Parkway, especially on bridges and near Walmart

Wyatt said the snow is expected to dissipate during the late afternoon or early evening. Currently, she said the Birmingham National Weather Service’s main focus is creating a forecast for the afternoon and evening.
